How much weight can a 20ft container load ?
Despite the maximum payload is 28-29 Ton, we only suggest to load 18-20 Ton at most.
Why ? Because verified gross mass.
Weight matters in shipping, the solas container weight verification has now become a global requirement.
In today’s guide, you’ll learn everything about VGM.

What is VGM ?
It is a concerpt comes from amendments covering container weighing regulations of the safety of life at sea (SOLAS) convention.
Key point: a packed export container will no longer be allowed to be loaded on board vessels unless weight declared.
When was VGM started ?
- The VGM regulation is effective from July 1st 2016.
- It must be declared prior to the load list cut-off date.

Who was involved in verified gross mass?
- This regulation was adopted by the IMO (International Maritime Organization).
- The shipper is obliged to verify the gross mass of the containers.
- VGM data must be sent to the ocean carriers and/or port terminal representatives.
How to calculate vgm data ?
The Verified Gross Mass is the combined weight of the container tare weight and weight of all cargo, including all packaging and dunnage.
There are 2 methods of verifying gross mass.
- weighing the container after it has been packed and door sealed.
- weighing all the cargo and packing materials, adding those weights to the container’s tare weight.

Before VGM came into effect, truck+loaded container was weighed and tare weight of truck was deducted to arrive at total weight big container.
How is VGM calculation different from this ?
VGM calculation methods is standard regulated by SOLAS. In fact, there is no essential difference. The key point is to make sure the total weight is within the scope of permission for shipping safety.
